the information that led investigators to the death of a south bay millionaire involving a prostitute and gang members. good afternoon.

i'm tori campbell. we're learning new information about the death of a millionaire last november. new at noon, ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live with information that the prostitute giving information to two gang members about the mansion. >> reporter: all four defendants in this case will be appearing here in court on february 4th to enter a plea. the chronicle is reporting that the lone female defendant gave people associated with an oakland gang information that ultimately led to this home invasion and murder. 24-year-old raven dixon is behind bars. she also faces a gang enhancement. the chronicle is reports that she worked as a prostitute for kumar and passed along information about the mansion, including the lateout. coincidently, the oakland police chief said that is the same group involved in a gang

war. the chronicle sources say shows people hatched a plan to invade the estate. the district attorney's office have charged three others with kumer's murder. his home was broken into last november while he and his wife were home. kumar's body was found inside but the police won't say how he was killed. the court had documents sealed because police requested it saying it would hamper the investigation. law enforcement is discussing when to reveal any more information on the case. word is that may happen soon. i spoke on the phone with dixon's attorney and he says this latest development comes as a surprise. he says his client never revealed that she had any direct ties to gangs. the attorney is waiting for discovery in this case from the d.a.'s office. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel

2 news. two young men charged with killing two teenaged girls are expected to enter a plea this afternoon. the suspects are charged with the brutal shooting deaths of 15-year-old and 16-year-old teens in late november. the two girls were lifelong friends who grew up in alameda. homicide investigators say the suspects knew the girls but there's still no word on a possible motive. san jose police have released the sketch of a suspect who tried to grab a 3- year-old girl out of her mother's arms. the man is described as latino, in his 20s, wearing a red baseball cap, jeans, a yellow striped shirt and smelling like automotive oil. the mother says her daughter was playing outside their home on tuesday when the man walked up and complimented her daughter tea beauty before trying to grab the girl. oakland police have released a sketch resembling a man wanted in the attempted kidnapping of a 25-year-old woman. the man is described as african-

american, tween 5'6" and 5'8" in his early 20s with dreadlocks. she was walking near the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station last month when the man tried to pull her into a waiting car. the woman struggled and escaped. we're following news out of north africa where algerian forces are carrying out a raid to retake a gas plant captured along with dozens of hostages by islamic militants. there is a lot of uncertainty about the situation. however, the pentagon says the operation by the algerian army is ongoing at this hour. they've surrounded the plant and are in a tense standoff. this followed the raid that may have resulted in the deaths of several hostages. the militant the claims 35 hostages and 15 militants have -- have died. but 20 hostages including some

americans, it's reported, had escaped before the raid. the militants claim they attacked the gas cam plex yesterday as a result of france allowing their airspace to be ub -- tosh used on attacks in mali. and explosion on a university campus sent a researcher to the hospital this morning. this prompted police to evacuate the building. police say chemicals were located inside the apartment where the explosion occurred but declined to specify what type of chemicals. investigators say researchers suffered hand injuries from the explosion and was treated at a hospital. battery problems have grounded all of boeing 787 dream liners. european safety regulators were the latest to pull the plug today following similar moves

by the u.s., japan and india. concerns were raised after a nippon flight was forced to make an emergency landing after emergency lights came on and there was a smell of smoke in the cockpit. >> from what we understand that from leaders in the industry, it's probably a one or two-hour delay. >> in san jose, a flight that was supposed to fly to tokyo tomorrow has been canceled. the faa says carriers must prove the batteries are safe before flights can resume. an investigation is underway into a possible outbreak of the norovirus at a contra costa elementary school. paul chambers is live in la fayette where the campus just got a thorough cleaning. good afternoon, paul. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. public health officials spent the afternoon and morning here at the elementary school taking

samples from students to check to see if this is indeed a norovirus outbreak. it's been a tough week for students and staff in la fayette e the principal says last thursday, some students and faculty started to get sick. by the next day, more than 100 of the 750 students were absent, claiming they had symptoms similar to the norovirus. >> it looks like norovirus based on the illness and the length of time one becomes ill. >> reporter: although think it's the stomach flu, it's not related to influenza. >> it does affect your stomach, causing the nausea, diarrhea, vomiting. >> reporter: cleaning crews spent their weekend scrubbing classrooms and working with public health officials. >> they have been here talking with us about how we fix our bleach solution, how we clean

if you have not already done so, officials strongly recommend getting a flu shot. we'll have more on this story later on at 5:00. police are investigating a large fight near berkeley high school. it happened at bancroft way and moved through the downtown area. four teenagers were arrested but it's not clear if they will face charges. it's also not clear what started the fight. police say no one was hurt. fremont police say a 27- year-old man acted in self- defense when he shot and killed his father last week. officers also revealed that 48- year-old david weatherton attacked his children with a baseball bat covered in nails. weatherton's son fired one shot during the argument. he later surrendered to police. police say at this time it does not appear that charges will be filed. a livermore man accused in a fatal shooting last month has been taken into custody in oregon. police identify the suspect as

meeting today. good afternoon, sal. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. this is the last day. and one of the ideas that has emerged from the meeting is starting more online education. 10% of the general education requirements in the future could be set up on some online academy that the university is using here wants to set up. governor jerry brown, a regent himself and a graduate of uc berkeley says he likes the idea and has submitted -- committed $10 million from the state budget to help the university add more online courses. >> we have to get out of our comfort zone and look at this thing in a way how do we maintain, enhance this wonderful institution called the university of california? and i'm a person, you know, i've been around a long time, i care about this university. i love learning. i love research but i'm a realist. >> reporter: uc administrators say developing more online courses would be a great

opportunity to education more students. the university says it is looking to add about 150 online courses for freshmen and sophomores within the next three years. uc president mark yudof has said he's pledged to faculty that no layoffs will occur as a result of those online courses being added. the university says the courses offered would help ease the strain of an already crowded general education courses, some of them are very packed. but some students are cautious about this proposal. >> online education can be a tool for helping students learn but it's not a panacea itself and what we really need to do is direct more money into the classroom and away from executive salaries. >> reporter: so while one of the student regents who is one of the regents but he's still a student, he was rather cool to the idea of having more online courses, saying it would deprive uc students of the real
